Ecology of Light – A Daylight Talk by James Carpenter

Artist and designer James Carpenter, founder of Studio James Carpenter/JCDA (USA), presents his Daylight Talk Ecology of Light, produced in collaboration with Aalborg University Copenhagen and moderated by Ellen Kathrine Hansen, Programme Lead for the Master’s Programme in Lighting Design.

In this talk, Carpenter reflects on fifty years of practice and a body of work that places light at the very centre of the design process. Across projects of all scales, his studio uses light as a key organising principle — one that enriches the perception and lived experience of space while fostering a deeper connection to nature. Drawing on a curated selection of projects, he shares his distinctive approach to engaging with the public realm and giving light an active, meaningful presence within the built environment.

Ecology of Light is available to watch for free as part of Daylight Talks, a series of online video lectures curated by Daylight and Architecture and organised in partnership with leading architectural schools around the world. The series presents architects and educators working consciously with daylight in their projects and teaching.

Daylight Talks is organised by the VELUX Group in collaboration with individual schools of architecture, and is endorsed by the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE).
