Webinar Series, Global Visions: Architectural Education & the Role of the Architect in the 21st Century (2023–2026)

This report documents the UIA Architectural Education Commission’s (EDUCOM) five-webinar series held between June 2024 and March 2026, convened under the co-directorship of Ashraf M. Salama and Selma Harrington. Bringing together more than thirty speakers from twenty countries across all five UIA regions, the series traced a cumulative argument for the fundamental reorientation of architectural education: from the role of the architect in the twenty-first century, through emerging pedagogical trends and transdisciplinary alignment, to the connection between research, pedagogy, and practice, and finally to socially engaged pedagogies.

Each webinar built systematically on the last. Speakers converged on a shared diagnosis: the traditional model of the architect as a technically proficient, aesthetically sovereign designer can no longer meet the demands of climate change, widening inequality, digital transformation, and the profession’s expanding civic responsibilities. The series argued that architects must be educated as listeners, mediators, collaborators, civic agents, and critical practitioners, and that this requires structural change across curricula, institutional culture, and accreditation frameworks, not isolated reform at the margins.

This is a substantive intellectual record of where the global conversation on architectural pedagogy stands today, and a foundation for the policy and pedagogical reforms the profession now urgently requires.
