“Inclusive Design for Disaster Preparedness and Response: A Global Perspective” is a book developed by the UIA Architecture for All Work Programme during the 2023-2026 mandate.

Around the world, communities face growing threats from climate change, environmental degradation, rapid urbanisation, social fragmentation, and recurring natural disasters — earthquakes, wildfires, floods, droughts, typhoons, landslides, and extreme heat. These crises expose deep inequalities in how safety, infrastructure, housing, and resources are distributed within societies.

Bringing together contributions from professionals and researchers across multiple regions — from wildfires in Chile to earthquake recovery in Morocco and Peru, from Indigenous housing vulnerability in Canada to inclusive emergency management in Australia — this publication offers perspectives rooted in local realities while addressing challenges that are undeniably global. Rather than proposing a single universal solution, it highlights the importance of context-sensitive approaches, and affirms that accessibility and inclusion must be embedded in every dimension of disaster preparedness and recovery — not as an added feature, but as an essential condition for safety, participation, autonomy, and dignity.

A call for international collaboration, and for an architecture that is more inclusive, responsive, and conscious of the realities faced by communities worldwide.
