New publication from the UIA Public Spaces Work Programme
“How to Protect, Assess, and Enhance the Performance of Public Space” is a book developed by the UIA Public Spaces Work Programme during the 2023-2026 mandate.
Public space is human-oriented: a mirror of democracy and cultural legacy, and a free, shared place of learning. Yet today it faces growing threats — improper occupation, lack of infrastructure, development pressure, exclusion, generic design — that put its essential role in civic life at risk.
Drawing on the work of experts from all five regions of the world, this book presents a global assessment instrument that respects local context without imposing a single, unifying perspective. Its goal: to help local authorities, communities, and professionals diagnose, protect, and improve public spaces — large or small, temporary or permanent — and to recognise access to high-quality public space as a fundamental human right.
A guide, and a call for co-participation in the evolution of our shared spaces.
