Two digital tools for architecture and the 2030 Agenda

During the 2023–2026 term, the UIA UN 17 SDGs Commission, developed two complementary online platforms. Together, they help architects and urban planners move from understanding the Sustainable Development Goals to applying them in their work, and they make visible what the profession is already achieving around the world.

SDG Toolbox — learn about the 2030 Agenda and assess your project

The SDG Toolbox is a free web application open to anyone who wants to learn more about the 2030 Agenda or evaluate a project against all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is designed for architects, urban planners and students alike.

Its information hub explains each of the 17 goals and its relevance to architecture and the city. To assess a project, users create an account, describe the project and answer targeted questions for each relevant goal. The tool then produces a visual summary and a detailed report that highlight the project’s strengths and the areas where it could improve.

Going beyond conventional green-building metrics, the Toolbox considers social equity, economic viability and environmental stewardship together, and recognises how the goals interact with one another. Reports can be shared with clients and stakeholders, and users can follow progress across all their projects over time.

SDG Panorama — explore projects around the world

The SDG Panorama is an interactive world map of architecture and urban innovation projects that contribute to the 2030 Agenda. It brings together projects curated from the 2023 and 2026 editions of the UIA Guidebook for the 2030 Agenda.

Visitors can browse projects by location and by goal, and consult statistics on how they are distributed across the SDGs and the regions of the world. The Panorama is also open to new contributions: architects everywhere can submit their projects for review by the UIA, so the map will keep growing as a shared, living record of the profession’s commitment to sustainable development.

Two tools, one aim

The Toolbox looks inward, helping each architect reflect on and improve their own project. The Panorama looks outward, showing what the global community is already achieving. Both reflect the Commission’s mission: to build a bridge between the UN agenda and the everyday practice of architects in the UIA’s member countries and territories.
