In Memoriam: Peter Mould (1952–2026)

The International Union of Architects (UIA) mourns the passing of Peter Mould, architect, former UIA Council Member for Region IV (2014–2017) and a committed contributor to the work of the Union.

Born in 1952, Peter Mould devoted much of his career to public architecture, urban design and heritage conservation. He served as New South Wales Government Architect from 2006 to 2012, playing a significant role in public projects and initiatives in Sydney and across New South Wales. His professional work included involvement with the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct and Sydney Fish Market, as well as a longstanding role on the Sydney Opera House Eminent Architects Panel.

A Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, he was also active in architectural education in Sydney and brought particular expertise in heritage, Islamic architecture and contemporary urban design.

Contribution to the UIA

Peter Mould left an important and enduring mark on the governance and development of the UIA’s Work Programmes. During his term on the UIA Council, he undertook a detailed review of their structure, objectives and methods of operation, with particular emphasis on strengthening their relationship with the policies and strategic priorities of the Union.

His work led to proposals for a clearer framework governing the UIA Work Programmes, setting out principles for their purpose, composition, leadership, objectives, responsibilities, accountability and reporting. The resulting Work Programmes Charter also established provisions governing sponsorship and the declaration and management of conflicts of interest.

Through this work, Peter helped establish clearer ground rules for the operation of the UIA’s Work Programmes and their alignment with the Union’s wider mission and policies.

Peter also represented the UIA as one of its appointed members of the UNESCO–UIA Joint Committee for the World Capital of Architecture programme.

The UIA extends its sincere condolences to Peter Mould’s family, friends and colleagues, as well as to the architectural community in Australia. The Union remembers with gratitude his commitment to architecture, public service and the work of the UIA.
