UIA General Assembly elects Council for the 2026–2029 term
The UIA World Congress of Architects Barcelona brought together architects, researchers, and students from around the world across the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB), the Three Chimneys complex and the Disseny Hub Barcelona, with the UIA Gold Medal & Triennial Prizes ceremony at the Sagrada Família. The congress programme was structured around six thematic lines: Becoming More-than-human, Becoming Circular, Becoming Embodied, Becoming Interdependent, Becoming Hyper-conscious, and Becoming Attuned.
The closing ceremony, held on 2 July at the CCIB, featured the reading of the Barcelona Declaration by CSCAE President Marta Vall-llossera — a manifesto built around six positions mirroring the Congress’s thematic strands, intended as a roadmap for the profession and a guide for UIA working bodies ahead of the 2029 Congress. Among its declarations, the text affirms housing as a right rather than a return on investment, and calls for the profession to move beyond an anthropocentric view of the world. The ceremony closed with the ceremonial handover of the UIA flag to Beijing, the next host city of the UIA World Congress of Architects in 2029.
Following the Congress sessions, the UIA General Assembly convened at Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHub), where the UIA adopted the guidelines and governance framework for the 2026–2029 mandate, alongside electing the new Council to lead the Union through the coming triennium.
