Serpentine Pavilion 2026: a serpentine, by LANZA atelier

The Serpentine Pavilion 2026, titled a serpentine, has been designed by Isabel Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo, founders of the Mexico City-based architecture studio LANZA.

The project draws on a distinctive feature of the English garden tradition: the serpentine — or crinkle-crankle — wall, a sinuous brick structure whose curving form provides structural stability while requiring fewer bricks than a straight wall. The pavilion’s name also subtly references the nearby Serpentine Lake, whose gentle curve evokes the form of a serpent.

Brick is the primary material, chosen to establish a dialogue with the existing brick façade of the Serpentine South Gallery — originally built as a tea pavilion — and to celebrate the English garden tradition. A translucent roof rests on brick columns that evoke a grove of trees, allowing light and air to permeate the space and soften the boundary between enclosure and openness.

Founded in 2015, LANZA atelier has earned international recognition, including the Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League of New York (2023) and the Young Architects Prize (2017). The pavilion is open free of charge from 6 June to 25 October 2026 in Hyde Park, London.
