Report of Activities 2023–2026: Webinars and Presentations
Report of Activities 2023–2026: Webinars and Presentations is a new publication by the Heritage and Cultural Identity Work Programme of the International Union of Architects (UIA), compiling webinars, technical panels, and case studies from the 2023–2026 action period. It opens with an introduction by Co-Directors Anju Malla Pradhan (Nepal) and Kassim Mwamba Omar (Kenya), who frame architectural conservation not as a passive, nostalgic practice but as an active tool for climate resilience, resource circularity, and social justice — what the report calls “tectonic upcycling.”
The volume brings together contributions organized around three interconnected themes: the renewal of historic cities through structural upcycling and “repair over substitute” policies, from Portugal to post-war reconstruction in Italy; the resilience of vernacular and traditional building systems in the face of earthquakes and disasters, including case studies from Kenya and Brazil; and cultural heritage as a driver of sustainable tourism. A dedicated section addresses the heritage of the slave trade, covering initiatives such as the Shimoni Slave Caves in Kenya and the Valongo Wharf in Brazil, alongside an institutional report on the contemporary reinterpretation of indigenous vernacular heritage.
Explicitly linking its work to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the report positions heritage preservation as essential infrastructure for a future built on the accumulated knowledge of the past, rather than a constraint upon it.
