UIA Releases 2026 Editions of the UNESCO-UIA Validation Manuals

The UIA is pleased to announce the publication of the 2026 editions of its two UNESCO-UIA Validation Manuals — the Programme Validation Manual and the System Validation Manual — which together set out the criteria and procedures through which the International Union of Architects, in partnership with UNESCO, implements the UNESCO-UIA Charter for Architectural Education. Both manuals descend from a validation process first established in 1996 and historically overseen by the UNESCO-UIA Validation Council, with RIBA supporting its administration from 2008. Following a strategic reorientation, the UIA Council established the independent UNESCO-UIA Validation Board in 2023, reintegrating governance and oversight under an in-house Validation Manager, and setting the stage for these newly revised manuals.

TheProgramme Validation Manual 2026 governs the direct assessment of individual architecture schools and their study programmes. Through an outcomes-based, peer-review process, a Report Group examines student portfolios, exhibitions of work, curricula, and meetings with staff and students against the 16 educational objectives of the UNESCO-UIA Charter. Programmes may be awarded full Validation, valid for five years, or Conditional Validation pending a confirmation visit. The System Validation Manual 2026, published for the first time as a standalone companion document, addresses a broader level: it evaluates the national or professional accreditation agencies (“systems”) that themselves accredit multiple architecture programmes. A Report Group examines the agency’s own governance, criteria, and procedures (Part A), while independently assessing one or two of its accredited schools to test the rigour of its judgements against the agency’s own decisions (Part B, the “same-case comparison”). A validated system extends UNESCO-UIA recognition to every programme it accredits, making this a powerful lever for raising standards across entire national or regional frameworks.

Together, the two manuals reflect the UIA’s renewed commitment to making international recognition more accessible and affordable, actively encouraging applications from schools, programmes, and accreditation systems in both UIA Member Sections and non-member countries alike. By strengthening the rigour, transparency, and outcomes-based character of the Validation process at both the programme and system levels, the 2026 editions aim to expand the global network of validated architectural education, advance the portability of academic credentials, and support the international mobility of architects and architecture students. Both manuals are now available for download on the UIA website.
