UNESCO-UIA Charter for Architectural Education — Revised Edition 2026

The UNESCO-UIA Charter for Architectural Education sets out the shared principles guiding the education of architects worldwide. Revised in 2026 by the UIA Architectural Education Commission (EDUCOM) under the co-directorship of Ashraf M. Salama and Selma Harrington, this edition builds on the Sexennial 2023 revision, responding to the interconnected crises of social inequity and ecological disruption that define architecture’s present moment.

The Charter calls for architecture to become a practice of regenerative justice, recognising that environmental degradation and social marginalisation are expressions of the same structural condition. It sets out the general considerations, objectives, and capabilities required of a quality architectural education, spanning design, cultural and artistic studies, social studies, environmental and economic studies, technical studies, and professional ethics, while establishing the conditions and requirements for a validated or accredited school or programme. New to this edition is dedicated guidance on the use of artificial intelligence in architectural education, affirming that AI must complement rather than substitute design thinking, and that its use must be grounded in equity, cultural diversity, and ethical responsibility.

Conceived as a living document revised on a structured triennial and sexennial cycle, the Charter provides direction to students and teachers at every institution engaged in architectural education, affirming architects’ social commitment and their responsibility to the quality of life of the communities and environments they serve.
