UIA Public Spaces Work Programme at the World Congress of Architects 2026

The UIA Public Spaces Work Programme will participate in the UIA World Congress of Architects, taking place in Barcelona from 28 June to 2 July 2026, with three events at the Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona (CCIB).

How Do We Assess Public Space?
29 June – 2 July 2026 | 09:00–18:00 | CCIB, Room 111, Booth 22

The exhibition celebrates the achievements of the UIA Public Spaces Work Programme. On display will be the Global Evaluation Instrument, the Special Issue of the Journal of Public Space, and highlights from the Work Programme’s activities and events. The exhibition is open to all congress participants during congress hours.


Symposium (Open Event)
Rethinking Public Space Evaluation – Frameworks, Indicators, Impacts

Hosted by the Work Programme Co-directors, this open symposium marks a milestone in the UIA Public Spaces Work Programme with the official launch of the Global Evaluation Instrument and the Special Issue of the Journal of Public Space. The event will feature keynote addresses from invited guests and a roundtable discussion bringing together UIA leadership and international strategic partners, including UN-Habitat, City Space Architecture, the International Forum of Urbanism (IFoU), and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB).


Expert Group Meeting (Invited Event)
Public Space Futures: Governance, Networks, and Global Agendas

This invited session will bring together the Work Programme’s international strategic partners and UIA leadership to consolidate plans and priorities for the future of public space globally. Topics will include the role of public space in the democratisation of the city; a proposal for Global Public Space Awards designed to recognise diverse and inclusive public spaces; the consolidation of the Global Public Space Network; and the expansion of UN-Habitat’s Public Space Charter and Global Toolkit to strengthen design perspectives in support of SDG 11.7.
